Understanding how to mix cement properly when it comes to home improvement projects is important in achieving optimal results. Whether you are setting up a new brick or stone structure, repairing a cracked wall, or pouring a concrete slab, the quality of your mortar or concrete mix will influence the durability of your project. This guide will explore how to mix cement to make mortar concrete, ensuring you get the right consistency and strength for your needs.

Understanding Mortar and Concrete

Just before we move to the mixing process, it is important we know the difference between mortar and concrete.

Mortar: This is a mixture of sand, cement, and water. This mixture is used to bond bricks, stones, and other masonry units. The work of mortar is to hold these materials together and fill gaps between them, but it does not give structural support on its own.

Concrete: This is a mixture that involves sand, cement, gravel, and water. This mixture is used to constitute slabs, foundations, sidewalks, and other structural elements due to its durability.

Ingredients for Mixing Cements

You will need the following materials to mix cement:

  1. Cement: This is a form of binder that holds every other agent together. Portland cement is the most common type used in both concrete and mortar mixes.
  1. Sand: What sand does here is to improve the workability of the mix and contribute to it strength. To make mortar, you will need fine sand, while for concrete, you will need coarse sand or gravel.
  1. Aggregate: Aggregate here provides strength and bulk to the concrete. In concrete mixes, this refers to the gravel or crushed stone.
  1. Water: The water job here is to harden the mixture, and activate the cement.

Always bear in mind that the amounts of each material depend on the size of the job you want to get done, and how much mortar or concrete you want to mix.

Equipment for mixing the cement mortar or concrete

After you have gotten all the ingredients for mixing cement, it’s necessary to also get the following safety equipment:

  • Mask or mouth protector
  • Safety goggles or eye protector.
  • Thick safety gloves.
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Buckets
  • Builders shovel
  • Stiff bristle brush

Have you gotten the listed equipment? Then let’s keep moving.

5 Steps in mixing a cement mortar or concrete

  1. Start measuring your ingredients: By using the manufacturer’s recommendations. Place the sand, cement, (aggregate if making concrete), and water into plastic buckets. For a normal mortar mix, the ratio basis is usually around 3 or 4 parts building sand to 1 part cement, recommendations vary, but you don’t want the mixture to be too wet or too dry. For the ratio for concrete, the mix would be 1 part cement to 2 parts sand to 4 parts aggregates. For a foundation, a mix of 1 part cement to 3 parts sand to 6 parts aggregates can be used.

For a concrete mix, measure about half of the cement, aggregate, and sand you are going to mix.
If making a concrete mix, tip the aggregates and sand onto your mixing board or into your container, forming a crater in the middle of the pile if using a board. Measure out half the cement you are using and pour it into the middle of the crater, which should end up creating a cone-like shape.

Warning During the process of pouring the cement, you should have your protective mask or mouth protector on as you will be exposed to dust.
  1. Begin mixing: After measuring your ingredients, the next step is to begin mixing, get your shovel, mix your ingredients together, and work the shovel around the pile of cement, sand, and aggregates, if you are making the concrete mix.

Bear in mind that there is no specific way to mix this. Also, there is no specific amount of water to be used, just pour water enough to form a smooth paste once you start mixing it.
  1. Check the mix and adjust: When the mix is wet enough, use the edge of the shovel to imprint in the top of your mixture to test its consistency, creating ridges as you go.

When a mixture is okay to be used it should be smooth and consistent, and should not be dry or crumbly.

If your mixture looks too watery, worry not as that can be fixed by adding other dry ingredients.
  1. Get to Work: Now once your mixture has it right texture, it now time to get to work. Normally mortar is used for walling and laying paving flags, while concrete on the other hand can be poured into a desired area to get a smooth even finish.
  1. Clean up: As soon as you are done with work, you should clean up. This step should be done as fast as possible, cause you want to ensure the mortar or concrete mix doesn’t dry on your working tools.

You can apply the use of a power washer or hosepipe to clean excess mortar or concrete mix off your mixing board and tools, use your stiff bristle brush to scrub them.

Using a cement mixer

A concrete mixer also called a cement mixer, is a machine used to mix cement, sand, aggregate (sand or gravel), and water when poured inside of it to form concrete.

Cement mixers can be used for larger projects. Below are a few tips for using a cement mixer:

  1. Make sure the mixer is well positioned.
  2. Run the mixer continuously once you start loading.
  3. The drum should be pointed upwards at a 45-degree angle.
  4. Half of your required materials should be started with.
  5. Add water gradually to ensure the mixture doesn’t get too sloppy.

Conclusion

Mixing cement to create mortar or concrete involves a precise balance of materials to achieve the right strength and consistency. Mastering the art of mixing cement is a skill that might be useful to one and can save you some real cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my concrete is too dry or too wet?

If you notice your concrete is too dried or wet,  it will be difficult to work with, and may not flow properly. To adjust, an amount of water should be added to the mixture until your desired consistency is achieved. If the other way round is the case, it may become too weak, and to fix this, you can add some dry concrete mix to balance out the water content.

Can I use the same mix for both mortar and concrete?

No, you should not use the same mix for both mortar and concrete. Both have different ratios and ingredients.

How long does it take for mortar and concrete to set?

Mortar takes about 30 to 60 minutes to set, but the temperature and humidity also matter here, however, it takes about 24 to 48 hours to cure fully and get its final strength. Concrete on the other hand takes about 2 to 4 hours to set, about 7 days to reach a certain portion of strength, and up to 28 days to achieve full strength. Curing time varies based on factors such as humidity, temperature, and mix proportions.
